Atlas Cultural Foundation   ACF works in Morocco’s remote Atlas Mountains and is currently focused on development in the region of Zawiya Ahansal.  Isolated within rugged mountains, Zawiya Ahansal’s 15,000 inhabitants are among the poorest people in North Africa; living without adequate health care, education, nourishing food and clean water.  Working with a holistic, integrated approach to development ACF understands that community needs cannot be solved in isolation because they are all interrelated. ACF facilitates successful projects by focusing on the problems of the entire region and matching experienced partners, local, international or governmental, with community needs.  Start-up resources, training and knowledge are provided for long-term, sustainable impact.  www.atlasculturalfoundation.org
The Adirondack Green Circle was started in 2007 by Gail Brill after reading Barbara Kingsolver's book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. At our monthly meeting we discuss ways to affect change in our own lives and in our community. See calendar for schedule.  Our Mission is to create a forum that will educate and inspire both ourselves and our community to choose sustainable living practices. Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. By promoting these practices in our lives and in the community, we move towards living in harmony with our earth and each other.  www.adkgreencircle.org
Common Ground Garden formed in the fall of 2008 to increase access to fresh vegetables and fruits for Saranac Lake area residents, and to explore sustainable growing practices through education and hands-on experimentation.  www.slgarden.com

Past Projects

E$PI - DEC Woody Biomass Project 2008
ASCI Projects 2007
Wilmington Waterfront Revitalization:  Working with the Town of Wilmington on water protection, the project will result in the revitalization of resources while creating new opportunities for business and tourism.
Adirondack Altai Assistance Project:  Sharing information and approaches to natural area protection and meeting the needs of local residents on opposite sides, but in similar areas, of the world.  Recently, ASCI sponsored a reception for the Altai Assistance Project in November 2006.  The gathering attracted press representatives, the Lake Placid Mayor, numerous Adirondackers who have visited the Altai region of Russia , and other residents interested in community development and environment to meet with two visiting directors of major parks in the Altai.
Adirondack Energy Independence :  Forging a collective effort to become energy self-reliant through renewable energy, indigenous sources, innovation and conservation by the year 2020.  ASCI was an early participant in the Energy $mart Park Initiative and has taken a leading role in advancing it. ASCI's commitment to promoting sustainable development in Park communities and enabling community action includes a strong focus on sustainable energy, including the ESPI.  As energy is a critical component of modern economic development and Adirondack residents' quality of life, ASCI sees this field as inextricably tied to improving local community options and also to conservation of natural resources.  In addition, global warming may affect the local economy and local ecosystem functions in a variety of ways that detract from predictable income streams; ASCI is committed to enhancing understanding of these impacts in the context of planning for local municipalities.  The ASCI Sustainable Energy Program will examine broad energy issues in the context of the Adirondack Park as viewed from a mountain community perspective.
Energy Smart Park Initative: Launched in 2005, ESPI is a collaborative process addressing energy issues in the Adirondack Park .  ESPI aims to make the Park an internationally recognized model for sustainable energy use and development.
